When people use or hear the word "tribe" they think of Africa. They see a bunch of lunatics dancing around the fire, naked, possibly engaged in cannibalistic activities. It sounds repulsive, doesn’t it? Yet that’s how it is.

Written by Toni Bowers
Right or wrong, people often judge you by the way you pronounce things. Say a word incorrectly and POW — they’ve pegged you as a provincial, poorly educated moron. Toni Bowers offers a list of commonly mangled words so you can double-check your own pronunciation.
Previously, TechRepublic ran an article about 10 grammar mistakes that make you look stupid. The examples cited involved the misuse of words in written and verbal communications. I’d like to go a step farther here and talk about words that may be used correctly but are pronounced wrong. They also may be much more flagrant examples of stupidity.
A caveat: My ear may be abnormally sensitive to mispronunciations since in college I developed an unnatural affinity for linguistics (can you say “Get a life?”). However, people often make snap decisions about character and intelligence based on their language biases, so it’s something you should be aware of. Here are some of my pet peeves, which you may or may not ever use in your life.
Note: This article originally appeared in our Career Management blog.
#1: Realtor
Many people — I’ve even heard it from people on national TV — pronounce this word REAL-uh-ter. Is this a case of wide-spread dyslexia, transposing the a and the l? It’s REAL-tor. That’s it. You’d think only two syllables would be easier to pronounce, but apparently not.
#2: Nuclear
Do you know how tough it is to be an advocate for the correct pronunciation of this word (NU-clee-er) when the president of the United States pronounces it NU-cu-lar? I don’t buy that it’s a regional thing. Ya’ll is a regional thing; nu-cu-lar is not.
#3: Jewelry
It’s not JOO-la-ree, it’s JOOL-ree. Again with the making things harder by turning a word into three syllables. What’s with that?
#4: Supposedly/supposably
The latter is a nonexistent word.
#5: Supposed to/suppose to
I think this one is more a matter of a lazy tongue than of ignorance. It takes an extra beat in there to emphasize the d at the end, but it’s worth it. And never omit the d if you’re using the term in a written communication or people will think you were raised in a hollowed-out tree trunk somewhere.
#6: Used to/use to
Same as above.
#7: Anyway/anyways
There’s no s at the end. I swear. Look it up.
#8: February/Febuary
As much as it galls me, there is an r between the b and the u. When you pronounce the word correctly it should sound like you’re trying to talk with a mouthful of marbles — FEB broo ary.
#9: Recur/reoccur
Though the latter is tempting, it’s not a word. And again, why add another syllable if you don’t need it?
#10: Mischievous/mischievious
I know, I know, it sounds so Basil Rathbone to say MIS cha vous, but that’s the right way. Mis CHEE vee us is more commonly used, but it’s wrong.
And last but not least, my personal all-time pet peeve — the word often. It should be pronounced OFF un, not OFF tun. The t is silent.

In 2 Corinthians 11:26, the apostle Paul mentioned being in danger from false brothers, among others. The last few weeks have been eye-opening about some of the wolves whose teachings and practices we have examined Biblically and found to be totally false.

The demotion exercise supposedly carried out by the Police Service Commission which affected the former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nuhu Ribadu is clearly a vindictive assault on the fine officer, Ribadu whose stellar performance at the EFCC not only gained international respect for Nigeria in its fight against corruption, but gave hope to the millions of Nigerians who have been betrayed by their leadership, if only for the brief period of time. This goes to prove that Yar’Adua is a lame duck of a President whose strings are being pulled by the various corrupt elements that helped to bring him to power and continue to influence the way things are run in Nigeria. Under Ribadu's leadership, the EFCC was able to investigate, prosecute and secure conviction of the perpetrators of one of the biggest fraud cases the world has ever seen (the Banco Noroeste case involving Emmanuel Nwude, Nzeribe Okoli and Amaka Anajemba). Also, for the first time, a sitting Inspector General of Police was indicted and convicted for corruption. Indeed, so effective was the EFCC that the saying in Nigerian public offices was "The fear of Ribadu is the beginning of Wisdom." What made Ribadu so effective was the independence granted the agency by the Obasanjo administration. Even though Ribadu was an Assistant Commissioner of Police when he assumed office, his EFCC activities were reported directly to the presidency and not the Inspector General of Police. Removing this bureaucratic layer made the EFCC a highly effective organization, especially as it did not have to get approvals or orders from higher ranking police officers who are renowned for their high degree of corruption and sometimes were in complicity with the criminals under investigation. This independence and attendant power bestowed on Ribadu officer bred in the higher ranked police officers jealousy, cavil and disdain. Snide remarks, accusations of selective justice and misconduct were rife. When the Yar’Adua government came into power, these police officers along with the criminal elements the EFCC was investigating (amongst whom were several state governors known to be instrumental to the Yar’Adua election to the presidency) increased their pressure on Yar’Adua, complaining about gross abuse of power by the EFCC. Yar’Adua bucked and Ribadu was pushed out of the commission under the guise of being sent on an advanced management course at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS). Eventually, Ribadu was removed as EFCC Chairman. Yar’Adua makes a big mistake by allowing the demotion. If anything, for the fact that Ribadu performed excellently at the EFCC, he should be exempt from the demotion, assuming there is any truth to the rationale being given for the exercise. The symbolism of this is that Yar’Adua is in cahoots with the various criminal elements that continue to bog down the Nigerian political landscape. Also, it confirms the lack of vision and ineptitude of Yar’Adua as a president. Yar’Adua has nothing to show for the two-years plus he has been in power. The militancy in the Niger-Delta has escalated several folds, diminishing Nigeria’s oil production by up to 25% as the president’s brother heads the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). Electric power generation is at its worst in 45 years, inflation is rife, crime rate has escalated, and there are food shortages and long lines at the petrol stations. The only difference between the Yar’Adua government and the Abacha junta is that Sergeant Rogers and other Al Mustafa goons are not on the prowl killing perceived enemies of the state, but with the growing army of political assassins, Niger-Delta militants and other criminal gangs, Yar’Adua does not need Al Mustafa’s goons to achieve an even higher degree of mayhem than the evil Abacha. At least during the Abacha regime, the Niger-Delta was not as dangerous as it is now. The evil General knew how to curb criminal militancy and had an independent mind, something Yar’Adua seems to be lacking amongst other leadership traits."conscience is a double-edged rapier"

The book was first published in 1987 and it was authored by Sandra Mackey.
Saudi Arabia is generally known as the largest producer of petroleum products world wide. But little is know about it’s predominantly Muslims inhabitants.
In the book, Sandra Mackey explored the nooks and crannies of the desert kingdom; she was able to portray life during the oil boom and life after the boom.
As a woman she did not fail to narrate extensively the secluded and the difficulties an average Saudi woman were forced to endure.
Although, the book is not aimed at condemning the esteemed value of the house of Saud, but to rather point out the abnormal level of imperfection acquired as a result of overdependence on tradition and archaic believes which does not augur well for the development of their buoyant economy.
The book is a must read for a good student or anybody who is bent on knowing everything about the desert kingdom called Saudi Arabia without living the four corners of the bedroom.

The South-West leader of the People Democratic Party, Chief Bode George was this morning picked up by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
This arrest is connected with Bode George’s activities as Chairman Board of Directors Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA). Dancing to public out cry, the EFCC under Nuhu Ribadu, conducted an investigation into the activities of Bode George especially with regards to award of contracts between 2001 and 2003 and nothing was heard of the investigation. Bode George was accused of mismanaging and fraudulently running the NPA to enrich himself and his cronies in the PDP.
Bode George, quietly went out of the country in what national observers termed an escape. Bode George re-entered the country last week ahead of the PDP meeting taking place in Abuja and boasted to airport correspondents that the EFCC can dare to effect his arrest and that he was not on the run but merely took a holiday after a long “sacrificial” service to the nation for 9 years.
EFCC swept in at the end of PDP meeting, where Obasanjo’s powers as Chairman Board of Trustees was clipped and the party recommended the implementation of Chief Alex Ekwueme’s report on reconciliation in PDP.
Bode George is expected in court on Tuesday next week.

As we have successfully crossed the second quarter of the year amidst the bearish trend in the market it is expected of company’s to show the general public and investors their performance during the said period. It has been a well known theory that company results affect its share price movement in the market. But in the last 2 months we have seen excellent performance yield little or no results leaving investors in tight situations. While pundits are of the view that the bearish nature of the market would end soon, some investors who have lost so much are dead scared of making financial commitments in the market as the much awaited rebound has not come to fruition. It might be a good idea to buy stocks at this time but caution should be taken at the type of stocks you buy and long term should be a good objective.

I have written this post once before now, and somehow the internet misbehaved when I wanted to post it, and I had no back up. Well, the Yoruba’s say that the house of a king that gets burnt only beautifies it. I guess the fact that I have to thank you again, will only make my thanks sound better.
I want to use this opportunity to appreciate everybody that has added value to my life in one way or the other. I want to thank everybody that wished me well in this new phase of my life. For all the text messages, the emails, the facebook walls, gifts, presence, prayer and goodwill e.t.c. I sincerely express my heartfelt gratitude. Thank You.
A wise man once said, that anybody that pauses to understand life will observe that the highest life lived is that spent in the service of others. The best use of money is to use it in blessing another. The best use of talent, of skill or value is in service. Thank you for being so ever supportive. Thanks for making my days and making my years. I appreciate and celebrate you for the years gone buy, and I welcome you with me into the years ahead. Thank you!
One thing I have done regularly for the last 17yrs of my life, is never to have a birthday where I don’t understand God’s gift and desire for my next level. I regularly seek his face, and ask for what he desires of me. His word says that if earthly men can give good gifts to their children, how shall God, our heavenly father, not give good gifts to his own children. He share his gift with me, and because you are joined with me, it’s applicable to you.
I declare over your life as it was declared over mine - “What God will do in your life this year, will dazzle you! If you think you have it figured out and can project how blessed you will be this year, you don’t, because God will come into your picture and pleasantly shock you! If you think you have been favoured by God and man, you don’t know what favour is yet, this year you will get to experience God’s favour! God will make you great, make you famous and you will be a blessing to others! God will bless those that bless you, and put a curse on those that harm you! You will bring things forth from your inside that will have global relevance! God will keep you free of fear, he will defend you and greatly reward you! In your journey this year, you will not know a better yesterday, your every today will be better than yesterday! Look around Nigeria, set your eyes on Africa, visualize the world, ask of God and he will give you what your eyes can see, and raise people through you who will lead nations. Only get up and take action, make yourself available, bear the marks of God, obey and do what is right.
Thanks again for all you are to me, thanks for believing in me, for supporting me, for making me feel appreciated, for all! “Eni ba dupe ore oni, a tun ri omiran gba”- He who gives thanks for today’s blessings, is qualified for another one. Thank you!!

Lafarge WAPCO, a company quoted on the building materials sub sector of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, has disclosed plans to embark on a N60 billion capital expansion programme meant to boost and upgrade its services. While speaking to the press last week, the company’s Managing Director, Mr. G. Lourandos said that capital investment would be funded by loans made available by banks in a two-tranche arrangement, involving the Naira and Dollar denominations.
Speaking further, he made known some of the details of the proposed investment provision which includes plans to deploy an additional line by 2010 with a capacity of about 2.2 million metric tones which would in turn spur aggregate capacity to 4.2 million metric tones. Lafarge WAPCO had already signed the contract with foreign-based technical companies in China and Finland for the supply and erection of the facility, the Managing Director disclosed.
It would be recalled that a similar scenario played out in year 2004, when the company took loans from a consortium of banks, which plunged the company into financial difficulties. However, Mr. Lourandos explained that as at the time, the company which was bankrupt, was operating below capacity and was incurring persistent losses. He however expressed optimism that this time around, the company intends to capitalize on its investment lines to generate enough earnings when a turn around through efficient allocation the proposed loan is effected.

6 Aug 2008 21:45 Africa/Lagos Which Bad Behaviors Rankle Golfers the Most? BURLINGTON, Vt., Aug. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- What frustrates golfers? Slow play, cell phones on the course, slow play, cheaters, golf cart commandos, slow play, unsolicited advice, walking on a golfer's line and ... did we mention slow play? In Playing Through: A Guide to the Unwritten Rules of Golf (Collins; August, 2008; $19.95), Peter Post calls out bad behavior and sloppy practices that take away from the pleasure of being on the green. Peter Post will be New York for the release of Playing Through, August 18, 19 and 20. "As an avid golfer and fan of the game, nothing riles me as much as bad manners on the golf course," says Post. "People take the measure of each other according to how they conduct themselves on the green." Post surveyed hundreds of golfers to confirm what irritates and impresses on the golf course. Each chapter examines a different annoying behavior and gives advice on how to deal with it. Complaint number one? Slow play. Two-thirds of survey respondents railed against it. Playing Through is a directive to golfers to pick up the pace. How? Be ready to play through when asked, play "ready golf," avoid excess practice swings, mentally prepare for your next shot as you approach your ball, and be on time for your tee time. In the book, Peter also covers: -- Top ten behaviors of golfers with bad manners -- What to do when you hit into other golfers or another golfer hits into you -- Dealing with temper tantrums on the course -- The "no four-putt" rule and what is an acceptable "gimmee" -- Dealing with cheaters -- Who not to coach -- Nassaus, Baseball and Bingo Bango Bongo -- How to be a spectator at your local tournament or at a professional event Chapter 19, "Fun Golf vs. Serious Golf: When to Cut Some Slack" may offend purists. While Post pays homage to the handicap system, he absolves golfers who take liberties with the rules-such as mulligans or the no four-putt rule- from angsting about entering their scores in the handicap system. Post advises new golfers how to navigate the disparity between the "spirit of the game" and the reality of those who enter scores that allow for liberties such as lift, clean and place, divot relief, the leaf-ball, and mulligans. "Having a horrendous putting day is a near-universal experience. It impacts the a foursome and the pace of play," says Post. "When a good time is marred by the travails of a fellow golfer who's off his game, it's time to offer him an adjustment-even if this means bending the rules." About the Author: Peter Post is the great-grandson of Emily Post and an author, seminar presenter and avid golfer (with a 17 handicap). He is a director of The Emily Post Institute, based in Burlington, Vermont. His previous books include the New York Times bestseller Essential Manners for Men, The Etiquette Advantage in Business, Essential Manners for Couples and A Wedding Like No Other. On Thursday afternoons in the summer, Peter can be found with his long-standing foursome at the Burlington Country Club, where he is a member and past board president. He is also a member of the Edgartown Golf Club in Massachusetts.
